How does one prepare to take on one’s first marathon? Let’s say that you are someone who’s put in a certain amount of work for months now – which is to say, that you can do maybe 25 miles running every week. If you aren’t an elite athlete and if you haven’t a coach to monitor and direct your progress, how is it that you build yourself up for the big race day?

First of all, you should probably only attempt a marathon if you have been clocking 25 miles every week for some time. With three months to go before the event is upon you, it is time to begin to take it seriously. It is time to go out on more punishing runs, and try to put some extra speed into it, perhaps with interval training. The secret of getting your body ready for longer and faster times is to ramp it up really slowly. Doctors who specialize in physiology recommend that you never try to take it up more than 5% of your regular run at a time. Even seasoned athletes can injure their bodies if they try to build up their regimen too quickly. If you do no more than 4 miles a day, make sure that you don’t jump up to, say, 10 miles a day, over the course of just one week. If you’ve been a casual runner all this while, you will probably need to take at least six months to prepare yourself with a basic level of physical fitness; preparing to go running a marathon should take you a year.

The speed part of running a marathon comes, surprisingly, with training with sprints. The more power your body begins to gain through this kind of training, the better you will be able to make it when you run long distances. It might be tempting to look at the kind of times the best marathon runners clock each time they enter a competition. But it would be dangerous to try to attempt that, unless you have a year to prepare. You can certainly find exceptions among highly trained sportspeople though. Consider this: when Lance Armstrong, the champion bicycle racer decided to take up the marathon, he clocked about three hours. The fact that he was in peak physical shape and rode on the Tour de France in bruising conditions and won, didn’t make him any better disposed to winning the marathon than anyone else. If, stamina wise, you find that you aren’t quite as good as Lance Armstrong, you’ll probably have to wait much longer before you try.

Once you do reach a certain level of excellent physical shape and stamina, you’ll need to do a degree of research to find out how best to make use of your time at your exercises. Magazines like Runners World should be required reading for preparations such as this. You could also sign up with your local Road Runners Club to begin to get into the spirit of it. Running a marathon is all about keeping your eye on the ring. It is all about endless training under bruising conditions. If you have the heart for this, you could be like a lot of talented runners – you could join their ranks.

Prior to a long distance race or training run, it’s a good idea to drink pickle juice to keep muscle cramps away. Now, this isn’t a joke. Actually, this is something that sport coaches have known in an informal way for some time now. Concentrated salty liquids will keep muscle cramps away. Walk into any marathon training camp, and you’ll see the pickle juice of theory at work – the trainers will be passing around the pickle juice regularly. It is so effective they say, that if you drink in some in the middle of a cramp, you can make it go away in seconds. They don’t really know why it works though. Traditionally, they’ve believed that it’s possible that all the sweat that you lose over marathon run gives you your cramps in the pickle juice replenishes it. That’s just a shot in the dark.

So they tried to test it out in a research study recently discussed in a New York Times article which you can read in its entirety here: Can Pickle Juice Stop Muscle Cramps?

It was easy for everyone to assume that a marathon run that makes you lose so much salt to sweat, makes your muscles spasm. This understanding has influenced sports drink design over the years too – they have lots of salt in them. This experiment shows though that the salt in pickle juice couldn’t possibly be mending their cramps. It takes time for whatever we ingest to be absorbed into the blood. These athletes were seeing their cramps get better in a little over a minute. There must be something about the pickle juice other than salt. They believe now that there must be some kind of chemical in pickles that helps calm down the nervous system. When we exercise too hard, our muscles begin to lose their coordination – some pull while the others push. Doctors wonder if this is what could be happening through a muscle cramp. And chemicals in our vinegar and pickles do have a way with the nerves that could calm down the lack of coordination.

Likely overtraining is fairly rare, with not training enough or with enough discipline being a more common occurrence. Nonetheless, as runners read about overtraining in the magazines, and the moment they have a problem with their performance, they may suspect they are suffering from the condition.

While not a hard, fast rule, let’s say if you are running 25 or so miles a week you are probably not overtraining. However, when you begin to up your mileage and if you do so too quickly, and are now feeling very stressed out and tired after you’ve hit 75 or 80 miles a week, this may very well be a case of overtraining.

That said, it is not a clearly defined or understood condition. Symptoms are not hard fast. You may notice, for example, that your resting heart rate is higher than it normally is. You may also find yourself feeling weaker than usual, or that it is difficult to walk without feeling some sort of pain or an elusive lack of coordination. So unfortunately, you realize in retrospect that you are overtraining as you look at your training logs and realize you have put in quite a few miles and are now feeling the effects.

The coaches of elite athletes are attuned to overtraining and how to keep their runners from falling victim. Runners at all levels will reach a point of diminishing returns from training. Exhaustion and a lack of improvement can signify a problem. As such they may need to step in and help the runner to scale back the training while still staying focused on goals.

If you suspect your are having difficulties consider seeking out the help of a sports medicine specialist. He or she may do blood tests to ascertain your physical states; for instance chemicals known as Ferritins tend to be at low levels if you have been overtraining. At other times, you may simply need to scale back, perhaps even opt for complete rest. But, as noted if you have concerns, it is wise to consult with a professional. In the future monitor your training carefully; it has been shown to be a effective means to help runners avoid overtraining.

Are you looking for black running shoes? Perhaps you have found that they are the most versatile as they will maintain a neat appearance after weeks of wearing. They are also great as an alternative to street shoes. You might be looking for a pair, not for your workouts, but for daily life. Perhaps commuting to the office or wearing all day in the office! The trend of sneakers to work dates back quite a few years and is not as startling or attention getting as it used to be. Nowadays they are as commonplace and as accepted as loafers or Dockers.

So whether you want a shoe that is impervious to grass stains or you want to walk around in comfort, where do you find these shoes? If you have visited shoes stores lately you may have noticed that they are getting harder to find. This may lead you to searching online. Certain brands reliably carry black leather running shoes; check ASICS, New Balance and Reebok for starters.

A great tool for searching is the Like.com visual search; click here to find women’s black running shoes.

When you find the styles that you like, you may wish to consider purchasing more than one pair. As you may know, shoe styles are frequently discontinued, seemingly after a very short time. Depending upon whether your shoes are for road racing, trail running or workouts, you will look for the type most suitable for your foot, whether it be a stability shoe, a motion control shoe, etc.

Some experts advice that running shoes should be strictly for running so you may wish to purchase shoes specifically for daily life, and keep them separate from your workout shoes.

Good luck in your search for black running shoes!

As you may know, running shoes can be expensive, and nowadays three-digit price tags are not unusual. So if you are on a budget, is it possible to get cheap running shoes? By this we we mean inexpensive, not lacking in workmanship, durability and quality.

It is much easier than it used to be, as we have many options to do comparison shopping on the Internet. Here’s one course of action you might take. First visit local stores and try on various pairs of shoes to get a sense of what works best for your foot type. Make sure to write down the model numbers and sizes of the shoes you select. It’s recommended that you stick with the major brands which have a solid reputation such as Nike, New Balance, Asics, Saucony, Reebok, etc. It is far more economical to find these brands at a deep discount than to pick off label inexpensive shoes.

   Amazon.com Widgets

You now have two options. If you live near any outlet stores or closeout stores, you can visit them to see if you find the shoes that you prefer. Sometimes sporting goods stores and even department stores will sometimes sell the shoes at a deep discount. Another option is to check thrift shops and consignment stores, as you can sometimes find brand new shoes. Scrutinize them carefully to make sure they have not been worn, as it is not recommended to purchase used shoes.

If you do not have success locally, you can use the Internet to do some price comparisons and find your ideal size and brand at the right price. The Google shopping results are very useful for side-by-side comparisons, but don’t overlook other shopping search engines such as Nextag, Shopping.com, BizRate and Shopzilla. Some of the discount shopping sites online run ads in running magazines such as Runners World. You may also want to consider online auction site such as EBay.

Check the video below for additional ideas on picking the right type of shoe, which is paramount in your pursuit of finding cheap running shoes.

Trail running is not without its perils, not least of which is getting a sunburn. So you may wonder, can aloe vera help with sunburn relief?

Assuming it is a minor sunburn — and do note that if you have a severe sunburn you should seek medical attention — there are several different ways for you to treat it at home naturally. Whenever you are suffering from a sunburn that is minor, be sure to immediately apply cold to the area, but not so cold as to cause skin damage. Running cold water over a small burn or perhaps applying a cold compress to a larger burn is an excellent way for you to immediately cool the area and help with the healing process. There are also some other natural things that you can do which can help with this, such as applying aloe vera to the area.

Aloe Vera has long been known for its healing properties, especially where burns and sunburns are concerned. You can purchase aloe Vera gel at almost any store that sells health items. You may also want to consider applying it directly from the plant, itself. For the many health benefits of aloe, it is worth considering growing some in your home, as a houseplant, so it is available anytime you need it.

The real secret to using aloe vera properly is to apply it to the area in a proper way. Some people simply rub down the area with the open end, but you’re really wasting a lot of the plant if that is the case. It is a much better idea for you to cut the leaf near where it attaches to the plant and then to slice the leaf along its entire length in order to expose all of the gel that is on the inside. You can then use this gel and gently rub it on the area, being careful not to pop any blisters that may have appeared or you can apply it directly to the area and cover with a bandage in order to keep it in place.

Aloe Vera is an excellent way for you to be able to give some soothing relief and to begin the healing process whenever you have a sunburn. As mentioned, if you have a severe burn that needs medical attention you should not try to treat it at home, but seek the help of a professional. See WebMd’s excellent resource: Sunburn – Topic Overview.

Proper care of your running shoes is essential to keep them in top condition and to avoid any build-up of bacteria and subsequent odor.

First of all make sure to wear proper running socks. The new high performance synthetic sports fibers are superior to cotton because they have the ability to wick away moisture. Unfortunately cotton holds moisture and takes a long time to dry. So the clear choice is the synthetic socks of acrylic or polyester, often with some percentage of nylon content. You can easily find then in your local running shop, sporting goods store or online. In the winter for added warmth, socks with wool content are ideal.

Be sure to store the running shoes properly; in a cool, dry place. Remove the sole inserts from the shoes to allow them to dry more thoroughly after your workouts.

Ideally you should have more than one pair of shoes and in so doing you can alternate them. This allows at least 24 hours between wearings so that the shoes have the chance to dry thoroughly. This will also extend the life of the shoe.

Additionally, letting the shoes dry out decreases the likelihood of your developing athlete’s foot, which is caused by a fungus which will grow rampantly in moist places. Obviously the interior of a running shoe now allowed to dry completely would be a perfect habitat. This is a condition you will want to avoid, as the unpleasant symptoms include itchiness, particularly between the toes. In addition to drying out the shoes, make certain your feet are dry before putting on your socks and running shoes.

Baking soda is great for controlling odor as well as absorbing moisture, so be sure to keep it in your tool kit for taking care of your running shoes.

What is the best running shoe or cross-trainer for you? It depends on many factors and you need to ask yourself a few questions first. It would be easy to outfit every foot in the world with running shoes if every runner’s feet were exactly the same.

Since every foot is different, and every runner or athlete is different, it goes to reason that you need to get the shoe that is just right for you.

What kind of sport you do, where you workout, how many times a week, your age, your relative health, your level of fitness, your dedication to working out, all of these factors come into focus when choosing the proper footwear. Are you losing weight? Are you recovering from a disability? Are you training for the Olympics? This last one is just wishful thinking. Unless you are from a very regionally isolated country, if you are competing for an Olympic medal you will have had your shoes selected for you by exercise physiologists.

If you are an average American woman somewhere between 25 and 65 years of age and you are selecting your running shoes for your morning jog around the park, then you can probably just go to your local Foot Locker and pick out a pair of Nikes or Reeboks that fit your feet.

If you are on a budget (and who isn’t these days?) you can get some of the very same name brand running shoes for women at discounters like Nordstrom Rack, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory, TJ Maxx, or your local equivalent to these stores. They have huge aisles upon aisles of great running and training shoes for you to choose from. It’s a little more difficult finding your size at these stores but if you have a little patience and don’t mind a crowd, then you could find an incredible bargain. Marshalls, for instance, carries Reebok, New Balance, and even some Nike, among other off-brands. Even Costco has some great shoe bargains, albeit a much tighter selection.

When it comes to running shoes for women, it is all about comfort. The most comfortable shoes are those without that big handle in the back; many runners have found that this cloth handle hits their Achilles every time. If you have problems with falling arches you may want to consult your foot doctor first or get prescription insoles.

Whatever your special need, there are running shoes for women to match your requirements. For most runners, it is just about finding a comfortable shoe that fits your budget and looks good on your feet.

With some planning it really is not difficult to Pick the Right Running Shoes for Women

It seems like these days everyone is on a fitness kick. This is no surprise given all of the news reports about obesity, high blood pressure, and our general lack of fitness. Running is one type of exercise that many people take up in order to stave off those extra kilos, or to get rid of them once and for all.

Running and jogging are sports that most people can do, given enough time. They are easy to do in different types of weather, and they don’t require expensive equipment.

Let’s face it, running is certainly cheaper than buying a gym membership or going rock climbing! Really, the only type of equipment you’ll need for your new running hobby is jogging shoes.

   Amazon.com Widgets

Running shoes are a special type of sports shoe that are calibrated for running. There are other types of sports shoes, such as basketball shoes, walking shoes, and cross trainers. These are designed for different types of sporting activities. Jogging shoes are the best type of shoes for people who like to run and jog. They offer good support for your feet, and will protect you against injuries such as back pain, or sore knees or hips. For this reason, it is essential to buy a good pair of jogging shoes.

Running and jogging shoes can vary significantly in price. You probably don’t need to buy a top of the range pair unless you are a serious athlete or have money to burn. However, you don’t want to simply pick up the cheapest pair of shoes that you can find, either. Bear in mind that your runners are all that is protecting your feet from the jarring force of the pavement. A cheap pair of shoes may seem like a good idea in the short term, but they can cost you dearly if you end up injuring yourself because you didn’t buy a proper pair of shoes. Try checking with the shop assistant in your local sports specialty store to see what they recommend. Be realistic about your budget and about your running habits.

It’s essential that you get properly fitted for your runners. This is because not everyone’s feet are the same. In addition, people have different running styles and ways of placing their feet. This means that certain shoes are unsuitable for certain people. You want to ensure that you get a pair of shoes that is properly fitted to your feet and your running style. For example, if your feet roll out when you run, you’ll need a pair of shoes that corrects for this. This will stop you from doing damage to your joints and muscles in the long run.

Always make sure that you replace your jogging shoes regularly. Once a year is usually frequently enough for most people. However, if you run very often, or for long periods, you may need to replace your shoes more often. If you find that your jogging shoes’ soles are wearing thin, or that your joints are hurting after a run, it’s probably time to invest in a new pair of shoes. But for starters, you can do what is possible to get the most of your running shoes.
